Test results reveal that Banfi’s 2003 Brunello contains grapes other than Sangiovese
In a report published today by La Nazione, tests conducted by Italian treasury officials have revealed that the 2003 Brunello di Montalcino by Banfi contains grapes other than Sangiovese (appellation regulations require that Brunello be made using 100% Sangiovese grapes). According to author Cecilia Marzotti, Italian authorities have not revealed which varieties were used but tests conducted by the Enosis laboratory in Asti (Piedmont) have revealed the presence of at least one prohibited variety. More test results, from wines seized at other Brunello producers, are expected in a few weeks, according to the report.

We are shocked. Shocked.
The question really is just how much Riuniti Lambrusco does it take to make a good Banfi Brunello.
While still living in a relatively free society, everyone should read “The Monster of Florence.” What is happening in Siena and Montalcino is far from a Brunello issue….read it and think carefully about what is really happening to multitudes of families and individuals in Italy suppressed by absolute fear and without due process.
‘The Monster of Florence.’ Finally, some human intelligence hits this blog on Brunello. As a Italian wine consultant in a retail shop, VINITALY this year was a surreal…a time travel back to medieval history learned in high school. A small Chianti producer told me of horror story of having their homes stampeded by 14 machine gun armed carabineri (sp?), as they are armed in the Rome airport!. Strip searched in front of his family; entire house search; detained in a room and questioned for 30 minutes while rest of family ordered to stay silent in another room. No search warrant. No judges approval. No Miranda. No official investiation. No indictment. Nothing! Absolute fear with no rights!
… but Brunello producer Banfi has strongly disputed reports that grapes other than Sangiovese have been found in their wine: see here
